Over a week ago, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz caved to enormous international pressure and agreed to supply German Leopard tanks to Ukraine, and also to authorise the export of Leopards held by other countries to our easternmost neighbour. What has followed is a great, deafening silence, because the truth is that in Europe we have hardly any tanks to spare.
I think this interviewee is spot on in his assessment. Europe doesn't want war. They're making "token" gestures to appease the US and it's messed up leadership.
What does the average “man on the street “ in Europe actually think is going to happen if these maniacs actually pursue a conflict with Russia? I think even here in USA people are caught up in the supposed vast superiority of our military. I think depending on “Troop Tranny” is not going to end particularly well.
Europe certainly needs a strong, common defense policy, equipping it with a credible deterrent to foreign aggression, independent of Washington and also able to deter Washington from sabotaging its infrastructure.
My own sense is that if we had done so a decade ago, including by withdrawing from NATO and establishing a Common Defense Procurement framework (politically impossible due to the French), not alone would we be facing less anxiety over what Russia does within its own sphere of influence, but in fact Russia would have felt no need to invade Ukraine at all.
Beginning with the demented president of the US, who left billions of dollars in military materiel in Afghanistan, and then move on to Denmark's military...
All of it as as sensible as recruiting ITALY to join the fiasco.
(And I write that as a person whose family considers the four basic food groups to be rigatoni, ravioli, prosciutto, cacciatore. )
France has 225 LeClerc main battle tanks. There is no manufacturing in place to make more. 40% of the fleet has been designated for 'training' as they are not operational due to lack of parts.
Decades of freeloading on America's willingness to provide for the common defense of the Western democracies turns out to be, shall we say, a little short-sighted. Trump tried to convince our "allies", for their own good, to share more of the burden but, aside from Poland, all he got was empty promises from the other European "powers." Oh, and he also was attacked for "undermining NATO."
Strictly speaking the Netherlands actually doesn't even own the 18 tanks that it could send to Ukraine.
Rather they have leased these tanks from other NATO members through an opaque legal construction that conveniently prevents the Dutch finance ministry from collecting sales taxes on these from the ministry of defense.
So very Dutch, they can always claim they never sent their tanks.
hahaha. what were they thinking if a real war would break out, instead of this farce in Ukraine? Now the whole world knows what a poor thing the EU is. Where is all the money they got? In someone's pockets? Like the millions and millions missing here in the US? And of course this is the government. Who is going to sue them? the judges they have been putting in place themselves?
Apparently the bridges in Ukraine are designed to take a 40 tonne loading associated with Russian tanks. The Leopard tanks are over 60 so these guys might find it hard to move around very freely..if they ever get deployed..
Farcically disarmed Europe struggles to scrape together a few odd tanks to send to Ukraine
When will Europe wake up to what is happening, what has happened?
Maybe Germany should start checking the basements of its citizens. There might be a Tiger or 2 next to the racks of wine: https://www.wearethemighty.com/articles/german-panther-tank/
It is time the public sees the bank accounts into which all this money is draining into....

In fairness any weapons that EU governments may have are clearly needed to combat those bastard farmers.

How many tanks does China have?
Farce indeed.

Europe is totally pathetic and fully deserves this. If you have no self respect, no one will respect you.

This would be a mere snack for the Russians.
Ukraine is not worth one drop of American blood.
