What happened is everyone - including Canada - got lazy and took things for granted under the bosom of American protection. Our muscles to remain vigilant in defence of liberty atrophied. Now we're realizing we're impotent trouble makers.

The USA became secure in its position and became the GAE. Like you said, it's crumbling in real time. Too weak to defend itself, and doesn't even have the moral will to do so.

It is going to suck to live through but not nearly as much as it would suck if it didn't fall apart.

Ottawa Canada resident, we have occasional winter days with high of -30c and summer days with +33c highs (90% humidity) and overnight lows of +26 (still mighty humid). Our wardrobes prepare us for every weather event . yuck!

Yes, the UK is talking a tough game but suffers from the same lack of resources as the rest of Europe.

Recently an article in the Daily Telegraph claimed that the British Army would run out of ammunition within days if it had to fight a war.

Realistically Britain's military now fulfils a similar function for the Americans as the Gurkhas used to provide for the British - a few extra regiments of well-disciplined troops with their own colourful traditions, who can join in an operation but couldn't mount one on their own.

Expand full comment
OldSysEng's avatar

Yes, but what I want to know is - did America actually win the Revolutionary War? Or was that for popular consumption, and the City of London won and is keeping the US and the rest of the UK in line?

Expand full comment
Allan's avatar

The revolution was a class rebellion against the old regime of crown and altar. It was never a matter very much of America winning or losing but of planters, financiers, emerging industrialists, and lawyers winning or losing. So it's natural that the City was or would become their ally against a system which, from time to time, paid lip service to unsecularity.

In a way, the USA begins to look comical, or pernicious, when you consider her first flag. It's virtually the same as the British East India company's at the time but with the union extended an extra stripe down the hoist. It's a good reminder about the aims of the revolution and who was supposed to be in charge.

Although I'm not a Christian, or even a theocrat, I still believe in a natural class structure. There needs to be a priesthood at the top. The go-getters must be kept in perpetual check somewhat lower down, say, as a third class. Allowing them to rule, as they do now, is like putting children in charge of parenting.

What does the average “man on the street “ in Europe actually think is going to happen if these maniacs actually pursue a conflict with Russia? I think even here in USA people are caught up in the supposed vast superiority of our military. I think depending on “Troop Tranny” is not going to end particularly well.

Expand full comment
Rikard's avatar

Since the news reporting is ridiculously one-sided, as in: if you only follow state and regime loyal media you'd think Russia has lost its entire army and airforce and has no ammo left, while the only ukrainian casualties are civilians murdered by russians, most people don't understand how the war can still be going on.

And when you point out that the news are so one-sided it makes Covid-reporting look sane, you are immediately accused of being a "Putinist".

We have been told for +50 years we may not criticise foreigners. I think that has built up a reservoir of resentiment all over western Europe, a reservoir which is now being emptied against Russia.

And not against the real enemy: the "refugees" invading us from MENA and Africa.

Observation seems to indicate that whoever, (or whatever ?), is driving this rapid destruction of our society has pulled out all stops. Every facet of our existence is being attacked.

We can no longer feed, clothe, or house ourselves. We are doing away with borders and the rule of law. We seem to have decided to stop having children, or educating the few we do have. Which may be just as well, since we have nearly eliminated the nuclear family.

No, none of it works!

Europe certainly needs a strong, common defense policy, equipping it with a credible deterrent to foreign aggression, independent of Washington and also able to deter Washington from sabotaging its infrastructure.

My own sense is that if we had done so a decade ago, including by withdrawing from NATO and establishing a Common Defense Procurement framework (politically impossible due to the French), not alone would we be facing less anxiety over what Russia does within its own sphere of influence, but in fact Russia would have felt no need to invade Ukraine at all.
