A few have pointed out that the plague chronicle is long on explanations for the dark turn in Western politics, and short on solutions. Is there anything that can be done about the forces presently harrowing all of our countries?

First, we must understand what the problem is. Right now I see serious pathology in these four areas:

1) Mass migration arising from a refusal to enforce sensible, traditional border security measures that most everybody observed prior to the twenty-first century.

2) An obsession with the gaseous byproducts of industrial production, which is driving attempts to reduce emissions by mothballing the engines of our civilisation.

3) An international politics dedicated to the widest possible propagation of “democracy” and “liberalism” across the globe, which is experienced from my German perspective as Atlanticism, and from the American perspective as a highly interventionist foreign policy.

4) An ideological project to equate such things as “democracy” and “liberalism” with the political programme of the existing establishment, and thereby to criminalise the political opposition as illegitimate and illegal.

What unites all of these things, is an elite political orientation that has almost totally abandoned the national context. Western nations today are controlled by a political class that claims to govern on behalf of the whole world rather than for their own people. Our rulers believe it is their responsibility to defend the rights and the prosperity of foreigners even to the extent of resettling them en masse in the West, to redress supposed imbalances in atmospheric gases across the globe, and to enforce their liberal beliefs everywhere. Because they have arrogated to themselves a scope of responsibility (the world) that massively exceeds their scope of accountability (their citizenries), they are forced to adopt a harsh programme of domestic political enforcement as they strive to free themselves from the constraints of their own nation states.
