Masked basketball at Boston University: Googling shows the superstition is not unique to ASU.

Many thanks to an anonymous reader for this gem, from Arizona State University:

Subject: N95 Basketball League

Good afternoon,

We have been given clearance to offer a basketball league at the [Sun Devils Fitness Complex], the “N95 Basketball League”. Participants are required to wear an N95 Mask while playing. No other masks will be accepted. The SDFC does not have N95 Masks on-site for participants; they must be provided by players.

This league is going to be played on Friday afternoons at Downtown, Poly, Tempe, and West, beginning Friday, 2/18. There is very limited space available. If registration fills up quickly, we will look at options at expanding the league, but that is not guaranteed and is subject to facility availability.

Registration is currently available online at FitnessOnline.asu.edu. Teams must have 4 members registered online before being “confirmed” into the league.

All leagues are “Open”; there are no restrictions based on gender. There are competitive and recreational divisions available.

The leagues will be self-officiated. Staff will only be on-site to enforce mask policies. Games will be stopped if participants are not appropriately wearing their N95 Masks. Multiple infractions will result in cancellations of the leagues.

We will send out formalized rules in the next week or so to registered participants.

Once again, players must have and wear an N95 Mask while participating. These are widely available locally as well as online. Individuals who do not have an N95 mask will not be permitted to participate.

We understand this is not the ideal scenario. However, this is our opportunity to have basketball available and we are going to do whatever we can to keep everyone safe during play.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at xxxxxxxx@gmail.com.

Best,

Danny, ASU Sports Programs Staff

These people sound totally sane and reasonable. Just Following the Science over there in Arizona, just keeping everyone safe.

You need to wear an N95 MASK. NO OTHER MASKS ARE ALLOWED, only the N95 MASK. You have to bring your OWN N95 MASK. We will NOT supply one. Our staff will be on-site to ENFORCE N95 MASK POLICIES. GAMES WILL BE STOPPED IF YOU'RE NOT WEARING YOUR MASKS RIGHT. If you keep not wearing them right we'll JUST CANCEL THE WHOLE THING. There are going to be FORMALIZED RULES, OK? You must HAVE AND WEAR your N95 MASK while playing. THIS IS NOT HARD PEOPLE. THESE ARE EASY TO GET. You can even find them online. There’s NO EXCUSE not to have one and IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN N95 MASK you WON'T be permitted to participate. This is for YOUR SAFETY.
