They have to let everyone know how incredibly virtuous they are. These are the same group of people who were posting videos of themselves getting the Covid vaccine. They were probably posting videos of getting their children vaccinated as well, telling everyone how selfless their poor kid is for getting the jab when in reality the kid has no idea what's going on.

Oh yes, it's the most extreme example of narcisam and normalised Munchausen's By Proxy which gets more and more common every day.

(p.s. "Imagine (something)..." is a turn of phrase for one to put themselves in that unthinkable situation, not to wonder whether such that such a thing occurs or not in life. It was a convoluted way of me saying "I would never ever in a million years do that to my kid(s), and whoever does is totally fucking insane, disgusting, and frankly evil.")

We had a PM who in the 1990s said these things, among others:

1) The stock market cannot go down

2) China is a stable democracy

3) Typical commie whining*

*This was said by him to a frail old lady, a pensioner, who wanted to know why he hadn't upheld his party's (Socialist Democrat) long-standing promise to elders, of inflantion-proofed pensions. The PM thought all the mics were off, but instead it went out live on air.

Said PM was nicknamed Nivea, after the skincream, since he was fat and sticky. He was a piece of work - if he had a cold or the flu, he always insisted on meeting every journalist or political opponent up close so he could cough at them.

The Grünheide plant was built at not inconsiderable cost in the middle of a rather large forest....

The economics barely make sense.

This single plant costs more to operate than any other Tesla manufacturing plant (translation for Teslarati - 'Gigafactory'), so it makes perfect sense for a bunch of Libtards to undermine an already fragile situation.

Still, who needs tax cash? Yes. Protestors.

Expand full comment
UM Ross's avatar

Yep. Choosing Germany was a mistake. Tesla should have built their plant in somewhere in eastern Europe, where people have first-hand experience with communism and don't put up this kind of nonsense, and where costs are lower.

Expand full comment
Andrew Marsh's avatar

Indeed, you are right. I suggest the plant was placed there to declare Tesla had arrived in the back yard of the companies it sought to emulate - BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Expand full comment
UM Ross's avatar

Probably correct, except the "emulate" part. I think Tesla was hoping to displace them. :)

That said, even the German manufactures did most their expansion over the last 30 years east of of the old Iron Curtain.

The emulation was the business model for C class, A4 and 3 series. Everyone knows these relatively small cars had huge profit margins compared with competition around the world. For many decades this trio embodied 'arrival' for all who purchased them. The wild card, of course, was not to use an internal combustion engine.

I used to share the enthusiasm for Jobs Creation (subsidised or no), especially in places like Brandenburg. I've never seen a proper cost-benefit analysis.

I accept one must also take into account not just employer tax controbutions but skills upgrades, Keynesian multipliers and the rest.

My heuristic is the more press it gets, and the more politicians congratulate themselves for Creating Jobs, the more likely that taxpayers are getting stiffed (but perhaps my thinking is just lazy and cynical.)

Twelve thousand jobs is a House Number. And the billion or so they've been given is dwarfed by the crazy money they're giving to Intel in Thüringen (which surely cannot make any economic sense whatsoever).

But I still can't see it as a bright point for Germany. For Brandenburg maybe but not Germany.

Plus there is a weird fetish for car manufacturing jobs (literally every third sentence uttered about the benefits of Britain remaining in the EU mentioned car manufacturing jobs) which pretends these 12,000 employees are living the labour dream, which I very much doubt.
