I blame right-wing extremists for forcing that young man to have to wield his box-cutter and therefore suffer the trauma of seeing the AfD politician bleed, which may exacerbate his mental condition.

I think the climate emergency is also partly to blame.

And Donald Trump.

Also people who refused the Covid vaccines.

Funny! But you omitted the most important ones! You forgot to blame yourself for your white privilege (or for being an adjunct of the white colonialists if you are not white). You forgot to blame yourself for being islamaphobic (whatever the hell that really means, I can't keep up with all the new made up terms nor old ones that are proscribed by the thought police). You forgot to blame yourself for transatlantic slavery (but only transatlantic and not the rest of the worldwide slavery that was, and still is, occurring). You forgot to blame yourself for denying men the right ti give birth, breast feed their babies and beat girls in women's sports.

In short you forgot to blame yourself for living in, and being a part of the building of, a successful country (and alliance of countries) that has committed the unforgivable sins of freeing its people to have self determination, to pursue science and truth seeking and to make the world a better place. Shame on you! Shame on all of us! We deserve to be returned to the yoke of serfdom for our arrogance and hubris for the bible is surely wrong, it is the elites who shall inherit the Earth...

This is probably preaching to the choir but I want it on the record anyway

> When the 25-year-old suspect was arrested, there were clear indications of mental illness, and was accordingly admitted to a psychiatric hospital. According to the current state of the investigation, there are no concrete indications that the suspect recognised that the injured party was an AfD politician when he carried out the attack.

In most things like this, most people (I, certainly) do not care whether the motivation of the criminal was political in nature. Most people, I think, (myself certainly) care more about whether the crime gets politically weaponized. This happens all the time and, critically, it can happen even with no underlying political motivation as long as it pattern-matches

I don't really care if any given Muslim-on-German crime is politically motivated. I will treat all of them like they are, because regardless of whether or not they are, the media will frame them that way to further their agenda

Expand full comment
Tardigrade's avatar

That's an excellent distinction. They make it sound like it's OK to slash somebody with a utility knife if the victim is from a disfavored political party. In reality slashing *anybody* is supposed to be a no-no, and the reason is secondary if not irrelevant.

Expand full comment
AndyinBC's avatar

But, but, but ...

The stabber's claim to belong to a designated victim group, combined with the stabbee's actual, or supposed, affiliation with any deemed "far right" organization, DOES make it OK, or even commendable, to wreak violence on the person of the victim.

Thus sayeth the Left.

Until the right can somehow get control of the media (good luck with that), leftist violence will be reported as peaceful protesting, exercising their constitutional rights or as anomalous. Meanwhile, anyone from the right even questioning such reporting (let alone actual protesting) will be branded as a violent seditionist bent on the destruction of “our democracy”…

Laughing Goat's avatar

The whole media situation is more complicated than just "media is lefty". The major media houses in the late 90ies early 00s got consolidated into just a few large conglomerates, most of which were seen as broadly aligned with the right. At least there was plenty of moaning and complaining about it from the left wing at the time. Some still trot out those talking points but now they seem to come from a parallel reality. Something must have changed at a deep level. I'm always frustrated that I don't have memories of the flavour of the mainstream press at the time, i barely read them now.

well yes, as long as you're precise in your definition of the term "cult". Otherwise, "cult" becomes a term for disparaging and delegitimizing your political opponents.

Any belief that comes with its handy dogma booklet to explain what one must declare to be truth is a cult.

Expand full comment
kertch's avatar

A physics textbook explains what must be declared true. Is physics a cult? How about the US constitution? After all, it's a document that holds certain truths to be self-evident. Another cult? Mental Illness stems from the inability to recognize or accept reality. A cult is simply the use of a mental illness as dogma.

A physics textbook teaches--or should--facts which have been verified by the scientific method. It is--or should be--updated to reflect new discoveries which introduce new facts or refute that which previously had been taught as factual.

edit: Philosophical beliefs are not facts. But they may serve as metaphors for good ways to organize societies that value the flourishing of the individual.

Expand full comment
kertch's avatar

I call Leftism a cult because many of its beliefs are held by adherents to be truths, when such beliefs are either unverifiable or demonstrably wrong. The final response of a cultist when confronted with factual evidence is always that in the end, the evidence doesn't matter. Thus, the willful rejection of reality.

Expand full comment
kertch's avatar

Not everything can be verified by the scientific method. If you believe in God, that is not part of a cult. It's unverifiable, so it falls under belief. If you believe the world is flat, then that fits in a cult.
