The major media houses in the late 90ies early 00s got consolidated into just a few large conglomerates, most of which were seen as broadly aligned with the right. Something must have changed at a deep level. I'm always frustrated that I don't have memories of the flavour of the mainstream press at the time, i barely read them now.
