And very shortly we will all find out if AfD can actually govern effectively or not. Rhetoric and campaigning are easy, governing is not.

Spiff's avatar

I am sure they can learn on the job. At the moment Germany has no real alternative anyway since all the others are globalist shills.

They can't do a lot worse than the governing parties. And this is the next step towards an expansion of the party system - same as we had with the Greens. What a scandal THAT was when they first got into Parliament. Everybody was big mad and kept bewailing the loss of political culture, their radicalism etc. A few decades on parties were bending over to enter into a coalition with them. It's probable that AfD will have the same trajectory: get rid of their "Fundi" wing, become more respectable. We have to have parties that together represent every part of the political spectrum (except the insane fringe) - we can't just not represent 30, 40, 50% because the Berlin chattering classes dislike their ideas. Nature abhors a vacuum. CDU left a vacuum at the place to its right in the political spectrum. AfD has started to fill it.

I am not a German so I hesitate to take an explicit position on the parties in that country. I am pleased, however, to see the failed old political class being damaged and, I hope, it will be broken so new people can try to do better.

While it may be difficult for AfD to do worse than the others that will not be the standard the MSM applied. In the case of AfD and in the UK also Reform, a single error will be jumped in and criticised. I recommend rapid action so long as they have a plan. On ad hoc issues take it step by step.

Quakeress's avatar

I agree, MSM will report most unfairly on everything they do. However, this can't be helped, and MSM have lost much trust among the population. AfD (and also Reform) simply have to learn on the job and hopefully stick it out.

Julinthecrown's avatar

Right. Who listens/reads/believes the MSM anymore???

That's crap that politicians tell us to justify their salaries, benefits, and incompetence. Government has a guaranteed revenue stream and few actual responsibilities. The problem is competition for that revenue stream, which is called "politics".

Yes, but if the AfD turn out to be bumbling normies, Mr Pistorius et al are presumably also going to find out that their hyperbolic rhetoric is somewhat ludicrous, and this won't reflect too well on any of the cartel parties.

Danno's avatar

All they have to be is "bumbling normies" and they'll easily outperform the cartel parties.

Classic.....

...when the media refuses to acknowledge the real gravity of the issues facing the republic, compare the conservative point of view with the nazi party, again.

Sounds like the rank and file volk of the BDR are just about sick of it! 🇩🇪📺📰🎤📻 Good for them.

Very enjoyable watching the English-language DW reportage on this yesterday, in which, amid clips of Siegmund and Rausch grinning and slapping each other’s backs hitlerishly, we see various benose-ringed and asymetrically-befringed leftists hyperventilating and blubbering that, yes, almost half the electorate voted for them, but they still don’t have the RIGHT

This is a big slap in the face for Merz, who keeps defending the Brandmauer with all he's got, and in itself this is remarkable - CDU is not for nothing called a party that's basically nothing but a Club for Voting In Chancellors ("Kanzlerwahlverein"). To go an do expressly what the chancellor has expressly told them not to do - this is quite an outrageous thing to do for high-ranking party members. Of course SPD unpacks the parallel to Weimar conservative parties as "stirrup holders" of NSDAP. They profit if Christian Democrats uphold the Brandmauer. Christian Democrats do not. So, SPD is putting the pressure on.

"Of course SPD unpacks the parallel to Weimar conservative parties as "stirrup holders" of NSDAP."

How depressing, and depressingly predictable. Newsflash for them: not everything which happens in Germany is Exactly The Same As That Stuff in 1933...

Quakeress's avatar

I think many of them really believe it is (Exactly The Same), but on the other the more strategic thinkers among them are smart enough to painfully squeeze the Christian Democrats whenever and wherever they can be squeezed. So it'll be "stirrup holders" till the end of time or until CDU stop feeling anguished and offended when being called thus.

Let us hope this is the beginning of real change towards tackling immigration and managed decline, and not a blip on the radar before the establishment crushes the populist right.

I hope other European states are taking note. There may yet be a democratic route out of this mess before the numbers are simply stacked against native Europeans.

"Yesterday, however, Rausch did not just get 44 votes. Instead he got 48 votes, which means that four CDU members broke ranks and pissed on the sacred firewall to help the AfD into their first Landtag presidency. "

ROFL!

I love the image. But though pissing on a Sacred Firewall is definitely sacrilege (iconoclasm?), doesn't pissing on a firewall actually make it more fire-resistant?

Thanks for the info. Germany, the 3rd largest economy in the world, has a lot of company. Brazil the globe's 10th largest economy, seems poised to join the club, along with France in the Spring, and England by the decade's end.

Much of Europe, Central and South America and the productive parts of Asia, are moving Right, as well. Let's hope they do not muck it up, like the Progressives they replace.

Well USAID is gone. All of this commonsense thanks to Trump et.al.

Kaycee's avatar

No so sure about England. I think they are much further along in their Islamist takeover. And the USA needs to take back their nukes, like they just removed their bombers from the air field that an attempt was made by backing of the Iranian regime. If Islam gets ahold of those nukes you can be rest assured they will use them. Trump needs to take them back my any means at his disposal, like yesterday!

The breach of a taboo in parliamentary democracy is revealed to be a breach in parliamentary anti-democracy, i.e. the breakdown of captured institutional self-regeneration.
