On 26 September, massive explosions destroyed both lines of Nord Stream 1 and one line Nord Stream 2, cutting crucial potential natural gas supplies from Russia to Germany. Nord Stream 1 had been idle since August; Nord Stream 2 was completed in late 2021 but never commissioned because of the tensions over Ukraine. The attack happened just as German politicians began to return from holiday and realise that the anti-Russia sanctions regime portends the worst energy crisis for central Europe since World War II.

Sweden blockaded the attacked Nord Stream pipes to conduct their own investigation of the explosions and seized unspecified evidence. Directly afterwards they classified their inquiry and refused to jointly investigate the sabotage with Denmark and Germany. Whatever proofs they have will never see the light of day.
