If the pandemic has taught us anything it's that the people to be most frightened of are the people who are the most frightened.

Also less attractive "experts" tend to be very pro-masking motivated by their desire to mask their more attractive competetition and prevent being constantly reminded of their own giant forehead and extra long nose, er. unattractiveness.

As awful as that face is, requiring a mask would get in the way of the solution I propose that's already been ruled lawful. I'm an advocate for a return of facial covering bans. Upheld by the International Human Rights Courts rulings, as recently as 2019, that we have "the right to interact with someone by looking them in the face and about not disappearing under a piece of clothing." Unobstructed human faces were declared a human right!! Just reimpose these laws. And pass them in the US. But make sure there's no emergency exception this time. It's not like they actually work and protect anybody from any emergency. Always just theater. The only way to reclaim injured minds from government mandated insanity is government mandated sanity.

Bans on *any* facial coverings, including masks. Reported as "burqa bans." But the law specifically included masks, all facial coverings. Prohibited. Period. Violations were fined. As recently as August, 2019. Just months before they were mandated.

France's burqa ban upheld by human rights court

The UK Guardian, July 1, 2014

https://archive.fo/Eg2vw

"Judges at the European court of human rights (ECHR) have upheld France's burqa ban, accepting Paris's argument that it encouraged citizens to "live together". The law, introduced in 2010, makes it illegal for anyone to cover their face in a public place...the law was not aimed at the burqa or veil but any covering of the face in a public place... ...The European judges decided...that the preservation of a certain idea of "living together" was the "legitimate aim" of the French authorities. Isabelle Niedlispacher, representing the Belgian government, which introduced a similar ban in 2011 and which was party to the French defence, declared both the burqa and niqab "incompatible" with the rule of law. Aside from questions of security and equality, she added: "It's about social communication, the right to interact with someone by looking them in the face and about not disappearing under a piece of clothing." The French and Belgian laws were aimed at "helping everyone to integrate", Niedlispacher added."

Netherlands: Burqa Ban Enters into Force

Library of Congress, August 27, 2019

https://www.loc.gov/item/global-legal-monitor/2019-08-27/netherlands-burqa-ban-enters-into-force/

"On August 1, 2019, the “Act Partially Prohibiting Face-Covering Clothing,”also known as the “Burqa Ban,” entered into force in the Netherlands. The Act prohibits the wearing of clothing that completely or partially conceals the face in spaces where people are expected to communicate with each other. Thus, face-covering clothing is banned on public transportation and in educational, governmental, and nursing care institutions, but is still allowed in such public spaces as on train platforms. The ban applies to burqas, niqabs, full-face helmets, balaclavas, and masks, but not to headscarves."

Bans on masks, all across Europe, laws prohibiting any facial covering in public, shopping, transportation, workplaces, anywhere people would gather - Illegal!! The headlines said "burqa bans." the laws said no facial coverings, not even masks in public. Illegal!! Re-adopt in Europe Adopt in the US. Problem solved.

Fair comment. We know that a comment on a person's physical appearance has no bearing on the intellectual discourse. Mockery of a physical feature is no different than the drawn caricature. 'it would be "really scary" if Covid "was as deadly as the MERS coronavirus"'

Things are only scary if they are BOTH 1. Very contagious and 2. 'Deadly' (= high IFR).

Getting hit by a bus is #2 but not #1. Common cold is #1 but not #2.

Expand full comment

Wait, if you have a common cold AND are hit by a bus...

We should clearly find a dangerous, experimental injection that makes colds & bus-hit injuries feel less bad but in no way whatsoever inoculates one from either.

If you have a cold and are hit (and die) by a bus then obviously the bus had nothing to do with your death. So we just need a shot against the cold, the bus thing isn't really important. That's how it works in covid world.

I keep hoping that eventually the effects of the vaccine will wear off and people will develop full and robust immunity. I had original covid. I was very sick. And I've never had it again in 2.5 years. I am out in public, exposed to large amounts of people multiple times a week - and don't care if someone is sick or not. I also helped care for family when they had covid and even with that close exposure never got sick again. (I did feel like I was fighting it off though after caring for them - so maybe that close exposure strengthened my immunity. Family had whatever the UK strain is called now because they were caught up in the big panic about the "new strain". sigh) Side note - none of my family is vaccinated, everyone has had it - some with symptoms and some with out (we checked antibodies to know) and nobody has been sick with it again. So pretty large pool of people with varying health including one who is high risk and it seems immunity lasts quite well in the absence of the vaccine.

It's a slow afternoon, so I emailed the Dr. with the large forehead the following:

Dear Dr. Bershteyn,

Greetings! I hope this letter finds you navigating the murky waters of our current COVID rollercoaster with the same enthusiasm and fervor with which you've been conveying your concerns. Oh, what a ride New York has been on! With the recent surge of cases by 55%, I’m starting to wonder if this is our new state pastime. It makes you miss the simpler times when the only worry was finding the remote to binge another season on Netflix, right?

I recently read your comments in the NY Post, and I must say, you have a flair for the dramatic. Your chilling revelation, "The most frightening thing is if the virus was more deadly,” has left me pondering: Is that truly scarier than a world without almond milk lattes? But I digress.

Drawing a parallel between the transmissibility of COVID and the deadliness of MERS? Sounds like a plot straight out of Stephen King’s desk. But fear not! For your spine-tingling thoughts are just what New Yorkers need during the sweltering summer heat.

Now, onto the topic of testing. Your keen observation, “Without testing, it will be hard for people to know if what they have is COVID,” was groundbreaking. And here I was, thinking that sneeze was from last night’s pepper overload or the pollen-laden breeze!

Ah, the saga of the Paxlovid antiviral. It's heartwarming to know “we actually have no supply problems.” It's reminiscent of those mornings when you have a box of cornflakes but no milk to pour over them.

And lastly, I tip my hat to your impeccable mathematical acumen when you noted, “1 out of every 100 deaths is still something.” Truly, Pythagoras would be proud.

Stay vigilant, Dr. Bershteyn, for who knows what the next variant—or coffee shortage—might bring!

Wishing you the best in all your endeavors (and mathematical revelations).

Mock away. These people deserve nothing less. Give these hysterical hypocrites some of their own medicine.
