Another excellent, albeit disturbing piece, eugyppius. Unspoken beneath your cutting sarcasm is that this is all intentional, not a result of naiveté or even incompetence or idiocy. At the top, these decisions are intentional. The lower-level bureaucrats who are left to deal with the carnage may be naïve or incompetent, but the decision makers who are fostering this debacle most certainly are not. They are evil, pure and simple.

Yes, it is being done with full knowledge of what it will result in.

For those catching up: Fact: There are countries with primitive subcultures that believe rape and brutality against women (and even boys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacha_bazi ) is morally acceptable. This is 1 reason why orderly modern immigration processes (long chucked out the window by Western countries) need to be adhered to.

As a girl, in the late 70s, I spent 4 years in Paris. We were vexed by such characters repeatedly asking us, as we walked home from school, "Do you want to come home with me?"

Students referred to these folks as "the Algerians." (https://www.amnesty.org/en/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/mde280022010en.pdf) But I believe some were Afghans, and from other countries as well.

These men would try to rub their groins against women in packed rush-hour subways. And they would come on to any age: a kid, a mom, or a white-haired grandmother.

They would rape their own as well. In the 80s, a heroic French woman of Algerian origin, Samira Bellil, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samira_Bellil) detailed how she'd been repeatedly gang-raped. https://time.com/archive/6953598/sisters-in-hell-2/ And it turned out there was something of an epidemic of such gang rapes. (More on Samira Bellil: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2004/sep/13/guardianobituaries.france )

Given my family's conversations with other French residents, we learned the problem had been well-known since before the 70s.

If you live in a Western country, whose immigration processes have been trashed, it's best to assume that you'll need to protect yourself when you step out. At least carry bear spray.

Sadly, one cannot assume personal safety as we could in the past.

I heard some very disturbing stories from folks who visited Paris back then. Every single perpetrator was from Africa. I can only speculate as to how much worse things have become. This isn't racism, it's the facts.

Add me to the list of raconteurs. Paris, 1973, first experience of the French Quarter, grabbed really viciously on the breast by an African guy as I strolled the sidewalk middle of the day. I can still remember the look on his face, too.

Normandy and Brittany were much more pleasant. In those days.

I was in Paris as a 19 year old girl in 1971. I narrowly escaped being abducted by an African immigrant. My mother and I never returned to that beautiful city.

You are so, so right. In 1977-79 I worked as a teacher in Tehran. If any of we women were out and about without another male accompanying us, it was not good. We didn't want to be out alone walking anywhere, and even two or three woman together could be dicey. The characterization of a "primitive subculture" is absolutely spot on. We used to call it "Stone Age mentality" as a joke, but it was truer than you might think. There were, of course, educated, sophisticated Iranian men who didn't behave that way. And then there were the low wattage "others". Those men had no respect for women whatsoever and believed that any woman out and about without a man as an "escort" was fair game. In crowded areas as people pass by each other on a crowded street, you would be shocked at how many males can pass by you at a good clip but still manage to get in a crotch grab on a passing woman. Looking back in shock, you could barely determine who the perp was in the crowd. Grab and run. We women usually carried Bic pens in hand and at the ready in order to stab the incoming hand.

Expand full comment

Thank you for this personal recollection. Chilling. Hard to imagine how stressful that must've been.

I also appreciate your nuance: "There were, of course, educated, sophisticated Iranian men who didn't behave that way."

Being concerned about out-of-control immigration, with no set processes or ability to vet properly, isn't xenophobic in the slightest. It's tragic that some insist that any adult discussion of the topic, can't include any criticism or questioning.

To wit: It's hard to conceive of a more cosmopolitan city than Paris, with its suburbs too.

On any given day at school, I'd sit next to a Lebanese girl on the left, and someone from Moscow on the right.

One day a new girl from Kenya, came into our geometry class. Her name was Lucy. She sat *under* her desk, and it was clear she felt afraid.

The teacher wisely let Lucy be, not requiring her to do otherwise.

I and a couple of my friends soon befriended Lucy and she lost her shyness. I still remember her laughing at our jokes and coming out of her shell.

Being concerned about rape and assault by cavemen is being concerned for *everyone* in a given country: all women and their families.

May we find our way back to civilized and open debate on the issue and action.

Awful. I believe what you say and can confirm it from my personal experience. But I don’t understand from your description how prevalent assaults were and how it was received by those who didn’t partake in this criminal behavior? Was it normalized?

(Also what a time to have been teaching in Tehran!)

Expand full comment

It wasn't constant, it was occasional. Yet it was frequent enough that we were always "on guard" and carried our Bic pens at the ready. I wouldn't say it was normalized. It just "was." Iranian women had problems with some of the men too but didn't really know what to do about it. We Western women were more overtly aggressive in fighting back. Overall, I loved the Iranian people and the country, but there were a lot of uneducated scumbags running around too.

And yes...it was an incredible time to be there from a historical point of view. Weird, strange, but also exciting and Iran was such a rich cultural experience on many levels. Ancient Persia had unbelievable handicrafts and art, not only in the architecture, but also reflected in carpets, miniature paintings, tapestries, bronze work, the list is long. It's so tragic what has happened to Iran since the revolution, which ruined it.

Out of respect for diversity re: cultural-ethnic mores, values and traditions, migrants to Germany ought to be punished for crimes according to the customs and religions of their respective group.

For arab moslems (f.e.), assaulting and sexually harassing a woman would mean at least a public flogging (Ithink it is fifty lashes with either a whip or a sharp rod accross the lower back) plus paying reparations to the victim or her legal guardian.

I feel that in order to avoid racism, we should most definitely show respect for migrants by upholding their various traditions when it comes to crimes and punishments.

We must after all be inclusive.

In the '80s I was living in Peshawar and I used to travel everywhere throughout the city, visiting friends, shopping etc., and I was always properly schmattehed-up but Americans are indelibly so anywhere.

And I was walking in a crowded street and a guy grabbed my juicy bottom. And in my very best extremely idiomatic Pushto I started carrying on. "Do you not have a mother? A sister? Am I not a human being like you?" etc. etc. etc. and a crowd of men soon formed and I continued in my extremely dramatic exposition, and all of them assured me that indeed I was a human being worthy of respect and they grabbed *that* guy and took care of him good.

I'll give lessons on how to respond to these guys for free if you fly me over and back. My Pushto is a lot rustier now and it wasn't ever pristine but the gestures I can still accomplish with full range of motion.

Obviously, this method (making the offender notice that you are a human being and not a thing) applies not only to mid-easterners, but to other nations too. Actually, just two days ago we had to use it against a completely native Finn, who was tasked by the new owner of the neighbouring apartment (rivitalo for those familiar with the types of Finnish houses) to paint their side of the fence shared with ours, and could not help himself but start cutting down plants (with wonderful berries on them) on our side that were getting just a bit in his way on top of the fence. My wife had to tell him very similar things to bring him to his senses. (That was an old man, so other methods of "persuasion" could not be used)

And just about a week ago my son had to intervene when another completely native (this time young) man was assaulting a girl in a fast food place late at night. Sorry for a bit of unwanted reality (this is not to SCA or Eugyppius but to certain others who might read this).

Expand full comment

If we're all going to be entirely honest, every level of sexual assault is found everywhere and extremely frequently with power/status imbalances so good luck to the girl or woman trying to get justice in almost every case. In the US we've had so many instances of basement rapes during HS parties in lovely suburban communities and the guys are always the popular ones from families of well-educated professionals.

But of course roving gangs of foreigners tend to stick out a lot more. I wouldn't say it's an improvement to be raped by one's own but every society has enough of its own problems that it's pretty moronic to import the problems of other cultures.

Expand full comment

The main difference lies in frequency of offences per offender, and how the offence is viewed by his peer-group.

When one of our class-mates in school (8th grade, meaning 15 year olds) got rough with a girl at a school party, /we/ roughed him up, because it just wasn't on. Same with girls who went for other girls' boyfriends; the girls sorted that out.

But for certain groups, that only counts if it's a girl/boy of the same group - it it's a white girl (to use the american catch-all term) she simply doesn't count. She has no honour, she has no clan that'll exact revenge, and on the remote chance police will be able to nail the culprit, he'll get off lightly anyway and will get honour and respect among his peers and his family for having been in prison.

Among many mid-eastern groups here, it is seen as a rite of passage for the boys to sow their wild oats among swedish girls, since they are all whores according to the mid-easterners - whereas marrying a swedish girl is close to a death-sentence.

Expand full comment

I will quibble with you here because in the US there's been plenty of in-group rape and sexual abuse and the girls who report it to the authorities--school administrators or law enforcement--will often be absolutely destroyed by their peers. Trying to get justice against a high-status group, even if you are purportedly a high-status girl, is often a hopeless quest and even if prosecutions occur, the girl's life in the community is over.

And as I said in this space recently, an important reason poor people in Muslim countries are often unwilling to send their daughters to school is because they can't protect them outside the house. A family trying to get justice shall have put a target on the backs of every one of their members.

Expand full comment

Plenty as compared to what, is the key. While I don't doubt that there's some truth to the Jock-sterotype with assorted wrong behaviour due to "affluenza" and such - that is quite certainly a drop in the ocean compared to how afghans, arabs and such behave against "infidel" women.

Nor is there any societal acceptance (as far as I can see) for the "Jocks", though there may of course be some "she asked for it by dressing up/getting drunk/chewing gum in a suggestive way"-crowd too - bit I think the average american would think it wrong to take advantage of a drunk girl no matter what the circumstances are.

Perhaps it is the Puritan cultural heritage that is the root-cause of ostracising the victim in such cases? I know it is among moslems, no matter how blameless the girl or woman is: even if the clan seeks and takes revenge, /she/ is still seen as worthless and may well be driven out or even killed (a "favourite" here, unique to moslems, is tossing her off of a balcony, as that makes it nigh-on impossible for police to prove any wrongdoing).

Expand full comment

The average American is not a HS boy and when popular HS boys get in trouble their communities often cover for them.

You are seeing these Muslim migrants in your country. They behave just the same in theirs. Middle-class urban women have more freedom of movement and dress and migrant men from the countryside, or from slum communities, handle that very poorly. And of course upper-class men can get away with anything and do--even with peer-group girlfriends, sisters and wives.

"No one (...) has any respect for people who won't fight back..."

True, and it has been observed both in small-scale and large. Hangers-on to the original bully often explain their actions as the victim deserving it, precisely because the victim won't fight back.

As did interviewed camp-guards after WW2: they came to hate the inmates for not fighting back (no matter the weakened state of the inmates), especially if circumstances were such that a combined rush by hundreds of inmates against maybe only 4-5 guards were possible.

It is even noted in ancient manuscripts and is also prevalent among other mammals: if the runt of the pack at least tries to fight, he/she is treated better than if he/she just takes it.

But western culture has for ca 70 years now had its boys raised by women who have taught "violence is always wrong" and "fighting doesn't solve anything" and "bullies hurt on the inside and are really weak".

And now, western men won't defend western women (that'd be sexist to do), so the women of today get to suffer for what the feminists of the 1950s-2000s fought for.

Kinder, Küche, Kirche might have been limiting to men and women alike, but it worked a damn sight better than the current alternative.
